Hank - Mother's Choice

mother´s choice

Perhaps the most well known, most sought after and most "supposed to be released very soon" collection in the Hank Williams catalogue are the Mother's Best radio shows. This collection of radio shows is considered by many to be Hank's best work and were done at the peak of his career in 1951.
The show was broadcast live between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m. on WSM out of Nashville, Tennessee. Some of the shows were pre-recorded to be played on the air when Hank was out on the road. Hank was paid $100 a week for recording the shows that usually consisted of one country song, one instrumental and a gospel song to close the show, but that's not all they have to offer.
The Mother's Best Shows capture Hank's personality better than anything else known to exist and they don’t paint the picture of a sad, lonesome, forlorn man hell bent on drinking and death as many books and other publications try to portray him as. In fact, it is probably the in-between song chatter that makes these recordings so great, you get a glimpse of what Hank Williams was like as a person. 20th Anniversary of His Death
A Tribute to Hank Williams
Country Music History CMH-214

Side 1: Hank Williams
Honky Tonkin
I Heard My Mother Praying For You (& Audrey)
We´re Gettin´ Closer To The Grave Each Day
Ready To Go Home (& solo guitar)
No, No Joe
Moanin´ The Blues
The Old Country Church (& Little Jimmie Dickens)
I Just Don´t Like This Kind Of Living
Thy Burdens Are Greater Than Mine
Help Me Understand (& Audrey)
When God Dips His Love In My Heart

Side 2: Tribute
"Hearts Hall Of Fame" was recorded by Marvin Rainwater on January 2nd 1953; he also composed the song. As it was only issued on an EP that Marvin gave away to friends, it was never generally available. The spoken intro and the actual performance turns this song into one of the best tributes - it is probably the rarest, too.
"The Life Story Of Hank Williams" was recorded by Hawkshaw Hawkins for King and has already been re-issued on a now deleted album. (The words of this song include some actual incorrectnesses).
"The Last Letter" is in fact Frank Walker´s last letter to Hank. Walker, one of the pioneer record executies, was together with Frank Rose Hank´s mentor during the years of his greatest successes. After he learned of Hank´s death he changed the words of his annual New Year´s letter to Hank. Jimmy Swan presents a moving interpretation of Walker´s last letter to his late friend.
"Hank Williams Will Live Forever" was recorded by Johnnie & Jack, the well known country duet in 1953.
"Hank Williams Is Singing Again" by Hank The Drifter, recorded in the 1960´s could have been the sub-title for this album. For on side one Hank is actually singing several songs which many of his fans have not heard before.
"Hank Williams Sings The Blues No More" was recorded by Jimmie Logsdon for Decca Records. It is in a fine similar style that of Hank.
"Hank It Will Never Be The Same Without You" & "In Memory Of Hank Williams" were recorded by the well known country artists Ernest Tubb and Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith, both records are eagerly searched collector´s items.
"The Death of Hank Williams" written by Jack Cardwell tries to recall the last hours of the late singer. This is one of the classic tribute songs to Hank, performed here by Big Jim DeNoone.

(The cover shows a rare picture of Hank with Sara and A.P. Carter)

HANK WILLIAMS "MOTHER´S BEST" RECORDINGS FINALLY BEING RELEASED

After years of legal wrangling, Hank Williams´ "Mother´s Best" radio programs will finally be released beginning this fall under Time Life´s exclusive agreement with his children, Jett Williams and Hank Williams Jr. The 143 previously unreleased recordings were made in 1951 for Williams´show on radio station WSM-AM in Nashville. Airing at 7:15 a.m. the program was sponsored by Mother´s Best flour. Williams and his band pre-recorded 72 of the shows to run while they were on tour. The shows were recorded on 16-inch acetate discs that were later thrown into the trash but salvaged by a WSM employee. One attempt was made to release the songs with overdubbed instrumental tracks, and one record label tried to release them and lost a legal challenge. After Williams´ family was given the discs, the estate fought an eight-year battle to establish sole ownership of the recordings. In addition to Williams´ best-known material, the recordings include 40 songs he was never known to have performed and others he never recorded commercially. Time Life will release the music periodically over a three-year period. Jett Williams says the recordings show another side of her father´s music. "Everyone will get to know the man and his musical genius as never before."

THREE HANKS – MEN WITH BROKEN THREE HANKS - MEN WITH BROKEN HEART -1996
Amazing reunion of three generations!
This project began as a way to get Hank III "on record" by pairing him with his father, Hank Jr. and his long-dead granddad, Hank Sr. Cute idea, and would not have meant much except that Hank III is a budding artist of exceptional promise, and Hank Jr. still has what it takes, and Hank Sr. is well, Hank Sr., and his songs are still great no matter who does what to them, and the producer, Chuck Howard, must be a genius. This album is so much fun to hear, and holds up well with after repeated exposure. Wisely, the younger Hanks left Senior´s greatest songs alone...they don´t take a stab at "You Win Again" or "Cold Cold Heart" or "I´m So Lonesome I Could Cry". They instead select "I Won´t Be Home No More" and nail it in the best version I´ve ever heard. They also perform "I´ll Never Get Out Of This World Alive" and "Men With Broken Hearts", "Lost Highway" and "Never Again Will I Knock On Your Door" in killer renditions. Hank Jr. sings "Hand Me Down", a poignant song of his own about a note his father left him that he didn´t discover until he was grown. Even if the song is not literally true, it is wonderfully done. This turned out to be a nice mixture of moods and tempos, and the voices of the three Hanks are just different enough. (William K. Adams {Amazon})

What you have here is the single most worst cd ever made.How someone thought it was a good idea to take Hank Sr´s low-fi mono recordings, peel off his voice and put in modern, digital stereo surrounding is beyond me. Imagine Hank Jr. singing a line, then a great guitar solo, then Hank III taking a vocal turn, then a guitar solo, then Hank Sr. coming in with vocals that seem to come off an lp that was found lying in the gravel somewhere at a flea market. It is beyond bad. Not a good idea, and nothing like "There´s A Tear In My Beer". Cory L. Schwent {Amazon}

Once again, it´s proved that the music of the elder Hank is timeless. Overdubbed (yes, you purists will hate it!) with "new" country backing with the added voices of Jr. & III. The real treat, though, is Hank III harmonizing with his grandfather! If you like Hank Sr. you´ll like Hank III. Anonym {Amazon}
